Philosophy

The program is dedicated to fostering an educational environment that is practice-oriented while identifying with art history and critical theory. Students who come to DVSA will find themselves working in the studio and doing library research, with the option of interning with community groups or making art in public spaces.

Visits to galleries and museums are an integral part of the program. These field trips include visits to the McMaster Museum of Art, The Art gallery of Hamilton, The Art gallery of Ontario, The Royal Ontario Museum, The Power Plant, The Albright Knox gallery, commercial galleries and artist-run centres. Visiting Artists are scheduled to give lectures throughout the year. These artists, from all over Canada, represent many disciplines and modes of representation and are an important way for students to understand and appreciate professional artistic practice.
