The 24 week program is divided into
four stages, beginning with intensive perceptual, formal, experimental and
theoretical study and ending with students working in independent study
in a major and minor discipline.
Each stage has defined objectives leading to the next that form a structured, integrated program. The interaction of the accumulated skills and understanding, accruing from each stage of the program, encourages the student's capacity to transfer this experience into more personal, self-initiated production towards his/her major study.
Students are encouraged to explore a wide range of materials and mediums within a multidisciplinary environment. Disciplines include painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, video, sculpture, installation and performance. In addition, throughout the year there will be scheduled field trips, visiting artist lectures and workshops. Students must complete all courses in the program in order to graduate with a Diploma in Visual Art Foundation Studies.
Some students who have completed the Foundation Studies program have continued their education at other institutions including McMaster University, the University of Lethbridge, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Ontario College of Art and Design and York University.
