There are a few ways that you can register for any of our classes. We do not, under any circumstances, reserve spots in any of the classes without payment. If you wish to register by phone, you can only do this with a VISA, American Express or MasterCard. If you wish to register by mail, you can send a cheque or your credit card information. If you would prefer to pay by cash or Interac you must come to the school in person. You can also register by sending an email, with your Visa, American Express or Mastercard number and all registration information. (include your name, address, phone number, credit card number, expiry date and the name of the cardholder, and class you wish to take. DVSA will NEVER ask for the three digit verification code on the back of your credit card.) We do NOT take registration yet over the internet via our website.
WILL I BE RECEIVING CONFIRMATION OF ENROLLMENT BY MAIL?
We are a small, non-profit organisation and do not have the resources to send out confirmations by mail. ASSUME THAT YOUR REGISTRATION HAS BEEN PROCESSED UNLESS WE CONTACT YOU. If there is a problem with registration (ie. the class is full or the amount on your cheque is wrong) we will phone you. Usually it is a good idea to have an alternate class (clearly marked as 2nd choice) on the registration form, just in case.
HOW DO I GET A LISTING OF YOUR COURSES SENT TO ME?
Starting with the Fall 2010 brochure, DVSA is trying to Go Green. We will be primarily focusing on sending out our brochure electronically rather than by printing. If you wish to get on our email distribution list, Click Here and send us your first and last names, and your email address. We'll be happy to send you a printer friendly brochure as well as any upcoming special events at the school. We will still be printing a small number of brochures, so if you don't have a computer, don't worry. We can still send out a hard copy to you upon request via Canada Post.
WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR ENROLLMENT IN PART TIME CLASSES?
We do take registrations up to the day that the class is starting, however, you run the risk of the class being full or cancelled due to lack of enrollment. Your best bet is to register at least a week before the start date, as that is when we decide whether the class will run.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A CLASS IS CANCELLED?
If DVSA cancels your class due to lack of enrollment, you may choose between a full refund, a credit, or you may switch to another available class of your choice. If a class is cancelled during the term (ie teacher is ill) you will be advised by phone that the class is cancelled and the make-up class will be added on to the end of term.
HOW DO I APPLY TO BE A CONTINUING EDUCATION STUDENT? WHAT COURSES DO YOU NEED TO GET A CONTINUING EDUCATION CERTIFICATE?
To apply to be a Continuing Education student, you need to let the office know that you wish to start a ContEd file. We will keep track of all the classes you take, and upon completion of the required courses, you will be awarded an official certificate. In order to qualify for a certificate, you will need to complete 15 ten week courses. Mandatory courses are: Art History, Life Drawing and a Design course. You will need 80% attendance and frequent lateness to classes will affect the decision.
CHILDREN'S CLASSES
HOW STRICT IS YOUR POLICY ON AGE RANGES IN THE CHILDREN'S CLASSES?
Generally, when a child is slightly older than the age range that is stated in the class descriptions, we don't mind the child being in the class, just as long as s/he doesn't mind being with younger children. However, our experience has told us when a child is younger than the age range outlined in our brochure that it seldom works out to the advantage of the child, the teacher or the other children involved.
CLASS INFORMATION
WHAT TIMES ARE CLASSES AVAILABLE?
Please view the brochure or website for these varied times. We also offer one day workshops during the fall, winter and spring terms; details on times are available on this website and in the brochures.
WHEN DO CLASSES START?
The term start and end dates are mentioned on the front of the brochure, or at the beginning of the class listings on the website. For instance, the Fall 2001 term is from September 24 - December 1. This means that if your class is on a Monday, you will start on the 24th of September. If your class starts on a Saturday, your first class will be on September 29. The same rule applies for each of our "regular" terms (Fall, Spring, Winter). The only exception to the rule is if the first week of classes coincide with a statutory holiday. Then, the class that is on the holiday starts the following week and runs an extra week after the end of term.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE SCHOOL IS CLOSED DURING BAD WEATHER? HOW DO I FIND OUT IF MY CLASS IS CANCELLED?
The first way to find out if we are closed is to listen to a local radio station (ie CKOC, Y95). If the public school board declares a snow day, then we will also be closed.
IF I SIGN UP FOR A CLASS, DO I BRING MY OWN SUPPLIES? HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT I NEED?
If you have registered for one of our many adult classes, you will need to bring your own supplies. Sometimes there is also a material fee involved; usually it is for communal supplies (photo chemicals, for example). When you register for a class, if there are supplies that you will need to bring to the first session, we will give you a handout that has been provided to us by the teacher. Alternately, we also send these lists to people in the mail or by email if they have registered over the telephone. Childrens' classes often have supplies included, although from time to time a common household item (ie a pop or juice bottle) is requested by the teacher for that day's project.
FACILITY
IS THE FACILITY WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE?
We are now wheelchair accessible on all floors of DVSA! Our elevator is located in the parking lot off of Hatt Street.
WHERE CAN I PARK WHEN I COME TO THE SCHOOL FOR CLASSES? HOW MUCH IS PARKING?
The school does not have parking available for the general public, only for staff. There is free parking on Hatt Street, metered parking on Ogilvie, and a public parking lot a half-block west of the school on Hatt. Please visit The City of Hamilton for more information on municipal parking.
FACULTY
ARE OUR TEACHERS QUALIFIED? WHAT ARE THEIR CREDENTIALS?
All teachers at DVSA are qualified as artists, scholars or experts in their field. Their academic credentials can be found by their names in our course listings.
HOW CAN I SPEAK TO ONE OF THE FACULTY MEMBERS AT THE SCHOOL?
Our teachers are not in the building on a regular 9 - 5 basis every day. If you need to reach any of our faculty, there are two ways to achieve this. You can leave your name and phone number with the office, and we will try to contact them to let them know you would like to speak to them. Alternately, if you wish to send them mail or email, you can send it care of the school and we will ensure that they receive it the next time they are in. Under NO circumstances do we give out the phone numbers or addresses of our faculty, as per the Privacy of Information Act.
WHERE CAN YOU SEE WORK BY OUR FACULTY?
Quite a few members of our faculty either have public studios where you can see their work, or they have exhibitions at galleries around the Hamilton-Wentworth area. The Dofasco Gallery here in the school also have exhibitions in which you can view examples of what our teachers create, either in group or solo exhibitions.
EVENTS
WHEN IS THE NEXT AUCTION?
The 41st Anniversary Art Auction has been booked for April 30, 2011. The free previews will be on April 28, 29, and during the day of the 30th.
IF I CONTRIBUTE TO THE AUCTION HOW MUCH MONEY DO I GET FOR MY WORK?
Because this is our biggest fundraiser of the year, there are only two options. You can receive 50% of the selling price back and donate 50% to the school, or you can donate to the school 100%. In both cases, you will be sent an official tax receipt for the amount you donated. This receipt can be used as a charitable donation on your income tax for the corresponding year.
CAN I DONATE A PIECE TO THE AUCTION FROM MY OWN COLLECTION?
Donations may be made with the same rules and regulations as with donating your own work. The auction is not reserved only for artists, and collectors can feel free to donate to DVSA.
HOW DO I FIND A PARTICULAR ARTIST?
IF we have a contact address or phone number of an artist you wish to reach, we follow the same policy as if you are trying to contact one of our teachers. We will take your name and phone number, contact the artist (if we can) and pass along your message. Just remember, we have no control over whether the artist will contact you. We can only pass along your message.
