Catherine Weir

A ceramic artist who works almost exclusively in raku.

Background / Training:

Catherine received her formal ceramics education from the Haliburton School of Fine Arts and the Dundas Valley School of Art. She has studied with some excellent raku artists, including Michael Sheba, Arthur Handy and Wayne Cardinalli.

Exhibitions:

Catherine regularly exhibits her work across Southern Ontario. Two of Catherine’s pieces were recently chosen by the City of Hamilton as a gift from the Mayor to the City of Kaga, Japan. In 2009, Stephen Branfman, a well-known American raku artist, chose Catherine’s work for his book Mastering Raku, the definitive work on the subject.

Inspiration:

Catherine finds inspiration for her art in the broad ceramic culture of the people and places she encounters—wherever possible she has learned the local ceramic techniques used in places she has visited.
